Men’s slip-on in suit shoes, loafers, loafers & Co.
While socks are essential in winter, as temperatures rise, women aren’t the only ones who prefer a stocking-free ankle area. The Gentleman blog is dedicated to the sockless shoe trend for men and shows which shoes make barefoot culture more than welcome and why not wearing socks in a suit is a sensitive issue.
Is everything you like allowed in summer?
There is general agreement among gentlemen to always wear knee-high socks with closed-toe men’s shoes. However, as the warmer days of spring and summer approach, some men are tempted to leave the house without socks, supposedly to feel more airy. In fact, the classic dress code is much more open-minded today than it was a few years ago. However, certain style requirements should not be affected by the new freedom of movement.
In glossy magazines and on international catwalks, men’s bare ankles are increasingly peeking out from under their pants. Mann Even in summer it is best to wear socks. It’s obvious that bare ankles in classic work shoes violate aesthetic sensibilities. But the growing trend towards bare feet has unpleasant consequences, particularly in terms of hygiene.
Thin socks regulate the shoe climate
Anyone who wears closed-toe, lace-up shoes such as Oxfords and Derby shoes without socks will soon notice their skin rubbing uncomfortably against the leather, which can lead to blisters and chafing. However, the desire for greater breathability when appearing stockingless is just an illusion. On the contrary: barefoot, your feet sweat more quickly in the shoe and an unpleasantly humid and hot climate develops.
Studies have shown that our feet release an average of a glass of sweat per day. High-quality stockings help balance temperature and absorb a certain amount of moisture. Without stockings, even beautiful leather shoes capitulate to such shameful treatment.
And the health of your feet is also affected. The consequences are usually a strong odor and sweating or painful pressure points. Additionally, sweaty feet provide a breeding ground for germs, bacteria and fungi of all kinds.
Alternative: Wear thin knee-length socks in summer
If you want to save yourself and your shoes from these hygiene problems, it is best to use transparent high socks, ideally made of wool or silk, for the classic dress code, even in summer temperatures. The material of the stockings depends primarily on personal taste, but the rest of the clothing also plays an important role in the choice of stockings.
While lightweight cotton stockings pair best with flannel fabrics, fine silk stockings are recommended for lightweight summer suits. If you’re unsure about colors, you can choose a color that moves between the shoe and pants so that the socks or stockings visually provide a smooth transition.

In a suit without socks?
In dress shoes without socks? It’s a sensitive subject. Although this is tolerated in informal settings, it is considered a fashion faux pas in formal settings. But in exceptional cases it can also work. There are certainly men and outfits for whom an appearance in leather shoes without socks looks elegant despite the mentioned disadvantages. So it can definitely look stylish. Therefore, you should at least know the fashion rules before (consciously) breaking them. And you can always wear sneaker socks (invisible) to limit excessive sweating in your shoes and be more comfortable in your shoes.
When men’s shoes without socks are acceptable
However, for formal occasions, men’s shoes without socks are an absolute fashion faux pas. Far from the conservative commercial floor, the modern gentleman has plenty of room for individuality.
Wearing socks without socks is no longer a taboo for men, especially in their free time – but such use should then be limited to certain shoe models. For example, classic men’s sandals and slippers usually work great without socks. In fact, loafers, (tassel) loafers, and even boat shoes are best worn without bottoms, especially when worn with shorts by someone with shapely, tanned legs.
All men who, for personal reasons, prefer to use socks for these feather-light slip-on shoes, are advised to wear wide socks. The classic stockings in slippers look rather out of place – the small, short socks, on the other hand, only reach the ankle and visually have the modern barefoot look.
