Literary adaptations are a popular genre among audiences and critics. How characters, suspense and plot are transferred from the imagination of the individual into images that appeal to the masses is the fine art of cinematic storytelling. The film adaptation of the wonderful novel by Amor Towles “Ein Gentlemen in Moscowsee. The title already contains a reference to our gentleman blog here, which is why our author Claudio Hermani looked at the book and series for us.

The story

Russian nobleman Count Rostov, a gentleman at heart, is sentenced by a Russian revolutionary court to life under house arrest in Moscow’s Metropol Hotel, the premier hotel in the square. Of course, he has to abandon his suite and move into the attic of the grand hotel, but his nobility is not at all lost.

In the novel published in 2018 and now available from Ullstein, author and former investment banker Amor Towles traces the life of a person in very adverse circumstances. Despite his spatial and social limitations, he does not let his kindness or his good style be taken away. It has become clear over the years that this good style can not only ensure survival in any social system, but also provide moral support.

Best casting

In the now-airing 8-part miniseries directed by Sam Miller and Sarah O’Gorman, Scottish-born actor Ewan McGregor plays the role of Count Rostow. and Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Anna Urbanova. The successful episodes are told without haste and very faithfully to the literary original and after a short time to get used to it, we take over the role of the Russian nobleman from the Scot McGregor.

Clear recommendation

When it comes to style, we learn that a daily routine, careful meals, exercise in small spaces, and unwavering kindness to those around us can give life—no matter how limited—a fulfilling depth. We recommend the series and the book!
